A://RUN12Apple for Business
Mac in a
managed fleet.
Deployment and management of Mac, iPad, and iPhone at work: enrolled automatically, configured to a standard, and managed alongside Windows rather than beside it. It is for organisations with Apple devices that are currently unmanaged, because the tooling was built for Windows.
THE PROBLEM
In most mixed fleets the Macs are the machines nobody is managing.
The cost of leaving this alone is rarely one visible failure. It is the slow accumulation: the workaround that became the process, the thing only one person knows, the renewal nobody questioned.
Our starting point is always the same: establish what is actually true today, then decide what to change. Work scoped against an assumption tends to solve a problem you do not have.
- 01Nobody owns itIt sits with whoever touched it last, which is not the same as being managed.
- 02No current pictureWhat you have, what it costs, and who has access are all slightly out of date.
- 03Only handled when it breaksAttention arrives after the disruption rather than before it.
WHAT YOU GET
What the engagement covers
Scoped before it starts, so you know what is included and what is not.
- 01
Zero-touch enrolment
Devices configure themselves on first power-on, wherever the person happens to be, so a Mac can be shipped straight to a new starter.
- 02
Policy and compliance
Encryption, updates, and security settings applied and monitored to the same standard as your Windows machines, with the evidence to show it.
- 03
App deployment
Software installed and licensed centrally rather than person by person, including the applications that need a licence server or a volume purchase.
- 04
Mixed fleet support
One service desk that is genuinely competent on both platforms, rather than one that treats a Mac ticket as an escalation.
HOW WE WORK
Assess, deploy, operate, review
Four stages with a written output at each one. You always know which stage you are in and what comes next.
- 01Week 1
Assess
We document what exists today and what it needs to do, so the work is scoped against reality rather than assumption.
- 02Weeks 2 – 4
Deploy
Changes are made in a planned sequence, outside working hours where disruption would otherwise land on your staff.
- 03Ongoing
Operate
It is monitored and maintained as part of your agreement. Problems are ours to notice, not yours to report.
- 04Quarterly
Review
What it is costing, whether it still fits, and what should change before the next renewal.
WHAT CHANGES
What you should expect
- Someone other than you owns it, with that written down.
- The current state is documented and stays documented.
- Cost is planned ahead rather than discovered at renewal.
- Decisions are made against evidence rather than assumption.
FAQ
Questions we get asked
01What is Apple for Business?
Deployment and management of Mac, iPad, and iPhone at work: enrolled automatically, configured to a standard, and managed alongside Windows rather than beside it. It is for organisations with Apple devices that are currently unmanaged, because the tooling was built for Windows.
02Can Macs be managed properly in a Microsoft environment?
Yes. Macs sign in against Microsoft Entra ID, enforce conditional access, run Microsoft 365 natively, and can be managed through Intune or a dedicated Apple management platform. The gap is rarely technical. It is that the Windows tooling was set up first and the Macs were quietly left outside it.
03Do Macs need antivirus and endpoint protection?
Yes. The idea that macOS does not get malware is out of date, and in a business the bigger exposure is credential theft and browser-based attacks, which are entirely platform independent. A Mac in a managed fleet should carry the same endpoint detection, encryption enforcement, and update policy as everything else.
04Are Macs more expensive to run than Windows machines?
The purchase price is higher. Over a four or five year life the total is usually closer than people expect, because Macs hold their resale value, tend to last longer, and generate fewer support tickets once managed properly. Where the cost genuinely appears is in specific software that only runs on Windows, and that is worth checking before a switch rather than after.
05What is Apple Business Manager and do we need it?
It is Apple’s free portal for organisations, and it is what makes zero-touch enrolment and volume app licensing possible. Without it, every device has to be set up by hand and apps are tied to personal Apple accounts, which becomes a real problem the day someone leaves. If you buy Apple hardware for staff, you should have it.
06Can staff use their own iPhones for work email safely?
Yes, with app-level policies that protect the work data without giving anyone visibility of the personal side of the phone. Work email and files live in a managed container that can be wiped independently, so a departure or a lost phone does not mean wiping someone’s family photographs.
07We are a small team on Macs with no IT person. Can you just take it over?
Yes, and it is a common starting point. We enrol the existing devices without rebuilding them, bring them to a standard, and take on the support. The first pass usually turns up a few machines without encryption and a few running an operating system two versions behind.
08How much does Apple for Business cost in New Zealand?
We quote after scoping rather than before. Anyone pricing this work without looking at your environment is guessing, and the guess is rarely in your favour. Scoping itself is quick, and we tell you what it costs before we start it.
09How long does it take to get started with Apple for Business?
A first conversation takes about half an hour and costs nothing. Scoping is usually a week or two of our time depending on the size of the environment, and we agree the delivery dates with you before anything is booked in.
10Can you deliver Apple for Business alongside our existing IT team or provider?
Yes, and it is common. We are happy to work as an extra pair of hands under your internal team, or alongside an incumbent provider on a defined piece of work. We will set out in writing where the responsibilities split, so nothing falls between us.
11Do we have to move all of our IT to Atlas to get this?
No. This can be delivered as a standalone piece of work for an organisation we have never worked with before, or folded into a managed agreement if you already have one with us. Plenty of clients use us for one thing and keep everything else where it is.
12Do you only work with Auckland businesses?
Our team is based in Auckland and we attend sites across the wider region. Most of this work is delivered remotely, so we support organisations throughout New Zealand, and we will say up front where being on site genuinely matters.
13Who will we actually be dealing with day to day?
Named people, not a queue. You get a lead who knows your environment and stays with it, which is the difference between explaining your business once and explaining it every time you make contact.
14What happens if we want to leave?
You keep the documentation regardless, and anything registered in your name stays in your name. Whether we stay involved is your call. Some clients take it in house from there, others move it onto an ongoing agreement with us. We would rather you left cleanly than stayed because leaving was difficult.
Start with a conversation.
Tell us what you are dealing with and we will tell you whether this is the right service for it, and what it would take.
